A Conversation with Clay

In the rush of our daily lives, we often forget what it feels like to truly listen—not just with our ears, but with our whole being.

My journey with ceramics began with a childhood fascination for the natural world. Even now, as I navigate the beautiful balance between creative ambition and the loving demands of family life, the studio remains my anchor. It is a sacred space where the noise of the world finally softens. Today, I want to invite you into that space.

Here at Lantau Pottery Studio in Mui Wo, we are offering a different kind of experience: A Conversation with Clay.
An Invitation to Be Present
This is not a traditional workshop focused on technical mastery or "perfect" specimens. Instead, it is an invitation to enter a dialogue with the material itself.
Clay is a medium of pure potential—cool, pliable, and honest. When we work with it, we aren’t just shaping a form; we are processing our own experiences and expectations. During our time together, we explore the medium with a limited toolkit—the most important being your own hands. As you reconnect with your primal sense of touch, you’ll find that the material responds to your mood, your energy, and your breath. It’s a rhythmic, meditative exchange—a chance to step away from the digital world and back into the present moment.

The Experience: Community and Connection
I designed this workshop to be a "gateway to clay"—a communal, accessible, and mindful exploration for all skill levels. Because this is a living, breathing work in progress, I am constantly looking for ways to enrich experiences and add to the unique charm of Mui Wo.
The Theme: To encourage spontaneity, each session features a theme. You are welcome to explore it, though you aren't required to. Arriving without a fixed plan is often the most rewarding way to embrace the process.
The Technique: We focus primarily on the pinching technique—a rhythmic, tactile process that prioritizes the "conversation" over perfection.
The Outcome: While I provide guidance on basic techniques, remember that the "kiln gods" can be unpredictable! At the end of the session, you’ll choose between a clear or celadon glaze. I will apply it for you after the first bisque firing, and 3-4 weeks later, I’ll contact you when your pieces are ready to be taken home.
Make a Day of It: The Slow Lane of Lantau

One of the greatest joys of visiting our studio is the opportunity to escape the fast-paced energy of the city. Although Mui Wo is only a short, scenic ferry ride from Central, the transition feels like stepping into another era. As the skyline fades and the lush green peaks of Lantau rise to meet you, the urban rush is replaced by a gentle village rhythm.
I encourage you to arrive with time on your hands. There is something transformative about letting the experience linger. Come early, stay late, and let the unhurried pace of the island become part of your creative journey.
